Mangan Ex Machina
Legend has it that during the Nara period (710-794), burning hot water boiled in the sea of Atami, making it an inhospitable environment for fish. However, a renowned monk named Mangan happened to stop by and prayed on behalf of the fishermen who were having trouble catching fish, and the source of the boiling water was transferred from the sea to the mountains, which became Atami’s hot springs.
Today, long after the effectiveness of the Mangan prayer has been lost, in the aim of restoring the sea(=Atami. Atami literally means “”hot sea.”” ) which has once again turned into hot water, hot springs were revived with the help of ”mechanical device”” of bumping hot water. That is what’s here, Karakuri Mangan Hot Spring.
