Kai Sakamoto
Soft stone : Solfataric clay
“Onsen-yodo,” named after the challenging excavation of the “Tanna Tunnel” that connects Atami and Kannami Stations on the Tokaido Main Line, is characterized by the transformation of rock into clay. This transformation occurs as hot springs and volcanic gases constantly pass through gaps in the bedrock, created by fault lines. The artist visualizes what happens inside the earth through a ceramic imagination, by employing ceramic techniques to alter the properties of onsen-yodo, which was originally stone.
Ceramic artist born in 1997. A graduate from Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2019 and a member of the shared studio “Yamanaka suplex” since the same year. Sakamoto uses materials from various towns and creates works while moving in and out of the framework of ceramic art.
