Byproducts Market : Yoshitaka Yazu, Tsuyoshi Yamada
Decadent Landscape / Atami research project2024
Yoshitaka Yazu and Tsuyoshi Yamada of Byproducts Market are likely to be drawn to ruins and objects in a state of decay. A shared fascination with ‘apocalyptic landscapes’ underlies the very essence of their artistic endeavors. These decadent scenes are deeply infused with traces of human life and presence, encapsulating the flow of history and the passage of time. For this exhibition in Atami, the byproduct vending machine, originally created in 2023, has been reconfigured to feature Atami’s own byproducts. Visitors are invited to purchase amulets or products containing Atami’s byproducts from the vending machine and embark on a journey through the ciity by the map of abandoned landscapes. Through this experience, we hope that visitors uncover even more of Atami’s hidden allure.
Byproducts Market is a material-recycling project that collects and sells attractive waste materials, or “by-products” from artists’ studios. The ‘by-products’ that are created during art production process are things that were destined to be left in a corner of a studio and eventually discarded. By daring to shine a spotlight on these objects that are not quite artists’ works but are nevertheless imbued with artists’ sensibility, Yazu and Yamada want to create an opportunity to rethink the value and possibilities of them. Major exhibitions include MIND TRAIL 2023 Okuyamato (Nara), Yanbaru Art Festival 2019-2020 (Okinawa) and Kameoka KIRI Art Cultivation (Kyoto). Based in Kyoto.
