Taichi Moriyama
Born in Tokyo in 1988. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts.
Taichi Moriyama creates earth-like works within natural environments and brings natural objects into white cube installations.
In May 2013, the artist was breaking river stones with a hammer to make gravel. Then, crystals of pyrite came out from the stone. At that moment, he felt like he had gone back in time and had a cube. His work aims to act as a device that causes an instantaneous expansion of perception occurring when encountering such natural phenomena and their traces. In addition to natural objects such as stones and wood, his practice includes many plastic materials that have fallen on the beach and concrete fragments in the city. In recent years, he has also created two-dimensional and three-dimensional works using these materials. In addition, he has been working on a series of works entitled “trace”; including a performance “Suijin” where he set up a stage on water and performed as a water god on top of it, and depicted a longhorn beetle living in a tree, coloring the traces of it that he inherited from his father’s work. He is also active as a member of the artist unit “Catfish”. Major exhibitions include “Looking at the Trees and Looking at the Forest” (Kana Kawanishi gallery, Tokyo, 2021), “Looking at the Trees and Looking at the Forest” (DEN5, Tokyo, 2017), “Scenic Landscape” (BLOCK HOUSE, Tokyo, 2016).
