Yuma Tomiyasu
Born in Tokyo in 1983.
Yuma Tomiyasu moved to England in 2005 and studied pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at the Fine Arts Department at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. In 2012, she returned to Japan. In 2017, she completed her doctoral course at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts, receiving her Ph.D. in fine arts. Using spirits, paranormal phenomena, dreams, and other invisible and scientifically unexplained motifs, she creates works that make the viewer aware of the gap between reality and the unreal.
Major solo exhibitions include “The Doom” (Art Front Gallery / 2021-22), “Aperto 15 Yuma Tomiyasu The Pale Horse” (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa / 2021-22), “KAAT EXHIBITION 2020 Yuma Tomiyasu |Wandering Illusion” (KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater / 2021), “The 12th shiseido art egg: Yuma Tomiyasu Exhibition “Obsessed With Dreams” (Shiseido Gallery / 2018), “guest room 002 Yuma Tomiyasu: Room of (absence) – Hiding Signs of things” (Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art / 2018). Major awards include the 21st Taro Okamoto Contemporary Art Award Special Award (2018), and the 12th shiseido art egg (2018).
